Background of HIS
Ministry of Health (MOH) has taken an initiative to introduce Information & Communication Technology (ICT) which will ultimately shape the future of the healthcare system in Malaysia

Through the development of the Telemedicine Blueprint in 1997: Hospital Information System (HIS) had been introduced in public hospitals in Malaysia
Integrate administrative, financial and clinical aspects
of a hospital
HIS

-
Improving patient management
-
Reducing financial burdens
-
Supporting clinical decision
-
Improving quality care for patients
Although it is important to adopt HIS in Malaysia, however, it was reported that only 21 out of 138 public hospitals throughout Malaysia (15.2%) employed a certain type of HIS
In Malaysia, there are 3 categories of HIS:
Basic Hospital Information System (BHIS)
Intermediary Hospital Information System (IHIS)
Total Hospital Information System (THIS)

PhIS in Hospital Selayang

-
This hospital has been using Cerner HIS where the vendor was originated from the United States of America since 1999, and is the first IT based hospital in Malaysia

-
At its implementation, government has invested RM64 million into the Turnkey Project. The vendor was chosen as it was the best during that period of time. However, since there was not an ideal integration with the pharmacy department, Pharmacy Hospital Information System (PhIS) which is an application initiated by the MOH was introduced to fill the gap for PIS in Hospital Selayang.

PhIS
-
A complex IS developed by Pharmaniaga Logistics Sdn Bhd (PLSB) as a form of communication between doctors and pharmacists for medication supply, as well as, nurses and medical assistants for imprest stock

-
Widely used in the inpatient, outpatient, and logistic pharmacy since its implementation in Hospital Selayang

-
Assists pharmacists in effectively managing supplies of medications, improving financial management and enhancing pharmacists’ clinical knowledge which ultimately optimizes pharmaceutical care for patients (Kuiper et al., 2007)
